This is the latest entry in our Feature Spotlight series, where we break down the OpenClaw features that keep your recruiting operations running smoothly. Each post covers what the feature does, how it works, and why it matters for your business.

The Problem: Manual Maintenance at Scale

Maintaining a fleet of AI agents can quickly become a full-time job. Every new release brings improvements in reasoning, better tool handling, and critical security patches — but if you’re updating 10 different agents manually, you’re looking at significant overhead and the constant risk of version drift.

Most teams still update manually, checking for releases and running terminal commands. But since February 2026, OpenClaw has offered a better way.

The Solution: Set It and Forget It

OpenClaw’s auto-updater was introduced in version 2026.2.22 to solve the maintenance problem once and for all. It’s a “set it and forget it” feature that ensures your agents are always running the latest stable code without you ever having to lift a finger.

The configuration is a single change to your openclaw.json:

{
  "update": {
    "channel": "stable",
    "auto": {
      "enabled": true
    }
  }
}

Proven Stability: 10 Agents, 3 Major Versions, Zero Downtime

We’ve been dogfooding this feature internally with a fleet of 10 active agents. Through three major version updates, the system has maintained zero downtime.

When a new stable release is detected, the auto-updater handles the download and graceful restart of the agent service. Because the transition is handled at the gateway level, ongoing conversations aren’t interrupted, and the agent wakes up in the new version with full context intact.

Why It Matters for Staffing Teams

  1. Continuous Excellence: You get the latest performance improvements (like the new Diffs plugin or better VAPI handling) as soon as they’re stable.
  2. Zero Maintenance Overhead: Your technical team can focus on improving prompts and workflows instead of managing npm packages.
  3. Security by Default: Critical patches are applied automatically, keeping your candidate data secure without manual intervention.

The bottom line: Most people are still updating manually and dealing with the friction of maintenance. With one config change, you can move to a self-healing, self-updating infrastructure that scales as your fleet grows.
