Here’s something that happened in January that I keep coming back to.
We sent a cold SMS to a machinist — let’s call him Garret J. — about open positions. Standard outreach. One of thousands of texts.
He didn’t respond for days.
Then he did. And what happened next is the whole reason I’m building this.
The Conversation
Over about 30 back-and-forth text messages, our AI had a full conversation with Garret. Not a chatbot script. An actual conversation.
It went like this:
1. He texted back and subscribed to job alerts. No link to click, no form to fill out. Just replied to the text.
2. The AI asked what he was looking for. Through natural conversation — not a survey — it captured:
- Trade: CNC Machinist
- Minimum rate: $35/hr+
- Location: Started with Hawthorne, CA. Then expanded to anywhere in the US.
- Type: Contract only
3. The AI searched current openings matching those filters. Real jobs, real-time.
4. Garret picked one — a Machinist 3 role in Mesa, AZ.
5. The AI collected his qualifications for the Chipton-Ross position:
- 10+ years of CNC experience
- Diploma/GED ✓
- 3+ years CNC production work
- Runs CNC lathes and mills, proficient with calipers and micrometers
- Available for onsite 2nd shift — Monday through Thursday, 5pm to 1:30am
6. Application submitted. Routed straight to the recruiter’s desk, ready for review.
That’s it. Start to finish. No portal. No resume upload screen. No “create an account.” No recruiter time spent until the application was already sitting there, qualified and complete.
What This Would Look Like Without AI
Let’s be honest about the traditional workflow here.
A recruiter sends that same cold text. Maybe they batch-send a hundred of them. Garret responds days later — hopefully during business hours. Now the recruiter has to:
- Reply within a reasonable window (or lose him)
- Ask qualifying questions over text or phone — back and forth over hours or days
- Search their ATS for matching jobs based on what they learn
- Present options and wait for a response
- Collect qualification details — education, years of experience, certifications, shift availability
- Enter everything into the system manually
- Route to the right team for that specific job order
Conservative estimate? 45 minutes to an hour of recruiter time, spread across multiple days. And that’s if the recruiter catches the response quickly and nothing falls through the cracks.
Multiply that by the hundreds of candidates in a typical database reactivation campaign. The math doesn’t work. Recruiters can’t have 30-message conversations with every candidate who responds.
So what happens in practice? Most responses get a quick reply and a link to an application portal. Candidate hits the portal, sees a 15-field form, and bounces. You just lost a 10-year CNC machinist because your process got in the way.
Why This Matters
Garret’s story isn’t special because of the technology. It’s special because of what didn’t happen.
No recruiter had to context-switch away from their current priorities. No candidate had to navigate a portal. No one had to be available at the same time.
The AI had the conversation whenever Garret wanted to talk. It captured real preferences — not checkboxes on a form, but actual conversational context like “I’d go anywhere in the US” and “contract only.” It matched those to real jobs and collected qualifications in a way that felt like talking to a person, not filling out paperwork.
~30 messages. Zero recruiter hours. One qualified, submitted application.
That’s the compounding effect we’re building toward. Every conversation builds the talent pool. Every candidate who engages makes the next job order easier to fill. The recruiter’s job isn’t disappearing — it’s shifting to the high-value work: reviewing qualified candidates, building relationships, closing placements.
The AI handles the 30-message conversation at 2am so the recruiter wakes up to a ready-to-go application.
What’s Next
We’re running more of these campaigns now. Different trades, different regions. The pattern holds — candidates prefer texting over portals, and the AI can handle the full intake conversation without losing context or patience.
If you’re a staffing firm sitting on a database of candidates you haven’t talked to in months, that’s not a dead list. It’s a talent pool waiting for a conversation starter.
